Little different review here. The GRAND SLAM is actually 4 different golf courses. It can be done in one day, but you need to start when the sun first peeps over the horizon in the morning and you will likely finish as it disappears at sunset, but I have done it. For most people I would recommend making a weekend of it. The GRAND SLAM is as follows:
Sugarbrook at Rutger's lodge:
Four Stars - Challenging but not impossible. Very well placed bunkers and has always been in good shape every time I've played there.
Pokegema
Four stars - A bit more challenging than Sugarbrook due to narrow fairways on the front nine. Greens are lightning fast most of the time. If you're higher than a 10 handicap, this course will frustrate you.... alot.
Eagle Ridge
Five Stars - This is a good course for long ball hitters. Fairways are a little wider than the other courses on this list and the greens are HUGE, but well groomed and fast.
Wendigo
Five Stars - Joel Goldstrand Design. Well groomed, fairways are tight. Very, very hard. I'm a 7 handicap and I give myself a pat on the back if I break 90 here.
All in all Grand Rapids is probably the best golf town I've been to. A lot of very nice courses competing for a relativley small number of customers. You will always find one of these courses with open tee times. With the exception of holding a tournament, I have never been told by any of them that they don't have an opening. Also, Grand Rapids is not too far from Giant's Ridge which also has some excellent golf. If you're looking for a golf vacation, I highly recommend this town. |
